SOE Focused Enterprise Management

Using enteriprise management tools to manage a standard operating environment (SOE)

Abstract

Enterprise Management Software (EMS) has become a standard way for organisations to ensure optimum network uptime for their users. The ability to react to problems identified by the EMS significantly reduces the  time taken to resolve issues and ensures access to critical business applications is maintained.

More recently, major EMS providers have concentrated their efforts on using the information collected by their management applications, to more effectively manage desktop assets.

The result is promotion of an “end to end” solution that promises customers savings of up to 40% in ongoing costs.

This paper seeks to identify the practicality of this approach and the likelihood of users achieving savings of this magnitude for a range of organisations.

SOE Hardware Refresh Cycle

The Standard Operating Environment (SOE) and its Potential to Reduce Costs.

Abstract

Over the past few years, it has become standard practice for corporate technology managers to replace their personal computer fleets each three years. This occurs because of the perceivedcosts of maintaining computers for a longer period, combined with the common accounting practice of amortising technology assets over a three year period.

The acceptance of the Standard Operating Environment (SOE) as a method of reducing an organisation’s operating costs has enabled many organisations to acquire software toolsets to maintain their SOE environment.

If these same tools can be utilised to more effectively manage an organisation’s computer fleet so that replacement is driven by usage, history and technology advances, rather than by the expiration of a lease, potentially large capital investments may be avoided.

This paper seeks to identify the savings potential for a range of organisations.

Reviewing the PC Lifecycle

Abstract

For many years now, conventional financial management has dictated the leasing of computers and replacement on a 3-year cycle as the most effective use of a company’s funds. Smaller organisations have often resisted this way of working, since the money comes directly from owners’ funds even if it is considered a “smart” approach.

With the current focus on environmental considerations, it is timely to review the computer asset’s lifecycle and the different influences at play.
